[Republican Party of Angola (P.RE.A.) flag] image by Jorge Candeias, 24 Jun 1999 See also:

Partido Republicano de Angola (P.RE.A.)

James Patrick reported a flag from this site. The flag has the following characteristics: 11 red and white horizontal stripes with the party symbol centered. The symbol consists of a ring of 18 blue stars and a wide scroll above an eagle. The scroll is white and bears the name of the party in blue "REPUBLICANO | DE | ANGOLA" and the eagle is white with part of the the head and neck in black, open wings, a group of arrows (I believe 7) in the right claw and something looking like a flower in the left claw, all in gold, and an escutcheon over the chest. The escutcheon has a red chef and 8 white and blue stripes below.

If I remember correctly, the original flag in website has the a motto "Pela paz e la prosperidade nacional"  that is not shown on your image.
Jaume Ollé, 30 Jun 1999

The flag I saw had no motto. It was a real flag, hanging on the wall behind the president of the party. The flag was fully visible, except the one and a half top stripes and the area hidden by the gentleman's head (a bit more than the "fly" half of the emblem, below the top of the escutcheon). I don't think there's enough space in the first area to write a motto and a motto on the second area would probably ruin the symmetry. Where was the motto supposed to be?

P.RE.A. - variant

[Republican Party of Angola (P.RE.A.) variant flag] sent by Carlos Gouveia, 19 Oct 1999

Eighteen stars represent the 18 provinces of the Republic of Angola. Six red horizontal lines: 5 red horizontal lines of the top represents 5 centuries of past-domination by colonial power and the blood of the Angolan people dispersed during the past slavery time. The 6th red horizontal line represents the period of national revolution that narrow the victory of the Angolan people and the implementation of independence of  the Republic of Angola. Five white horizontal lines represents 5 centuries of reflection by conquered peace and liberty of the Angolan people. The eagle represents liberty and faith in God. The shield represents national defense. Five arrows represent salvation and the initiation of the Angola Revolution. The compass represents science and technology. The hammer represents work.
Carlos Gouveia, 19 Oct 1999

We had this flag reported by Jorge Candeias with a different image which was based on an actual photograph of the Party's President.

The new flag image differs from Jorge's and from the referred flag photo in the following points:
- the stars lie directly on the stripes, not on a white ring
- the ring of stars touches only the 7 central stripes
- the eagle's shield has a red chief and 8 white and blue H stripes
- the eagle is white with black "hood"
- above the eagle, a large white scroll with "REPUBLICANO DE ANGOLA"
- there's no writing below (but this is hidden in the photo)
Antonio Martins, 21 Oct 1999

Both 'Political Recourses on the Net' and 'Elections Around The World' have it listed as a bona fide political party
Gary Selikow, 02 Dec 2001

The PREA - Partido Republicano de Angola, name attributed by it's first members, began its activity at March 14 1988 in the city of Zürich, Switzerland. Assembling in its bosom a group of young exiles with a Christian Republican political ideal, led by the young political exile and university student in the Zürich University, Carlos Alberto Contreiras Gouveia.

In 1990, the Massachusetts Republican Party, together with the National Republican Party, recognizes the "de facto" existence of this party with the designation of Partido Republicano Angolano. From then on, its activity spread through Europe - Netherlands, Portugal, Canada, Mexico, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Brazil, Russia, France, Italy, Sweden, Japan, Belgium and Spain and mostly in the United States.

On August 28 1994, in Massachusetts in the United States, the P.RE.A. was founded under the leadership of Dr. Carlos Alberto Gouveia. Dr Gouveia was its first and current President. Under the Law 15/91, of 11th May the operations of the Party outside the country where closed to fulfil the requirements of both the Constitutional Law and the Law 15/91 of 11th May, Law of the Political Parties.

In March 19th, 1997, the TS - Supreme Court of Angola, in the terms of article 14 of the Law 15/91 of 11th May, with the wording introduced by the article 4 of the Law 4/92 of 27th March, which changed the Law of the Political Parties, declared the P.RE.A. to be legalized from that date onwards.

On 5th June 1998, through an unanimous Resolution of the III Extraordinary Congress of the P.RE.A., the Political pentagon of the P.RE.A. withdrew its Executive from Luanda, transferring it to the United States of America, exercising its political party activities in the service of the Angolan party facing the conditions imposed by the current regime against the Political Parties of Civic Opposition in Angola, with the purpose of safeguarding the party interests, preserving the spirit of peace, unity and national reconciliation.
